The scientific aim of this postdoctoral position is to discover the underlying mechanisms that allow fish to see the polarization of light, and to develop a behavioural assay for the robust assessment of polarization vision. You will complete microspectrophotometry studies of rod and cone photoreceptors; testing the hypothesis that axial dichroism exists in typical cell spectral classes. You will also use an LCD based technique in a two-alternative, forced-choice task to test the behavioural ability of fish to see the polarization of light independently of any other visual cues. You will have a PhD in biology or biophysics with expertise in microspectrophotometry of biological cells. Experience in quantitative animal behavioural studies is also essential.
