INFORMATION SYSTEMS ENGINEER (m/f)
(18-month contract)
 
As part of the ILL's IT service, the information systems team (7 staff) has the responsibility of developing, implementing and maintaining the various computing facilities required by the Institute.
Working at the ILL will allow you to evolve in an international organisation with an open IT environment exploiting the most advanced database management systems (Oracle 10g, Real Application Clusters, MySQL), programming (Web Services, J2EE, Framework Struts, Hibernate, Development tools, stored procedures…) and server applications (JBoss, Oracle Application Server).
The ILL is now launching a project with three other leading European research organisations: DIAMOND, ESRF, and ISIS. The aim of the project is to design a software architecture capable of cataloguing, storing and presenting the data generated by experiments at the four organisations. This includes an analysis of user authentication at the four organisations.
Your mission will be to:
  • Analyse requirements and needs with respect to the new tool, in close collaboration with the 4 organisations;
  • Write the technical specifications;
  • Define the needs of the organisation(s) not in possession of a catalogue;
  • Develop the software infrastructure required to support the interoperability of the organisations' data catalogues;
  • Deploy this software with a view to establishing a data catalogue shared across the 4 organisations;
  • Provide the services based upon this generic framework which will enable users to search the partners’ data repositories;
  • Gather and act on initial user feedback;
  • Provide progress reports and documentation.
In the framework of this mission you will be required to travel to the UK.

We are looking for the holder of an advanced university degree with excellent working knowledge of DBMS and recent technologies (OOP in particular). Experience with transactional applications (UML and Merise) would be an advantage. You must have development experience in Java and in one of the following languages: C, C++ and common scripting languages (Python, shell
scripts ...). You should be open-minded, have good teamwork skills, and enjoy a sense of service to users. Fluency in English is essential, fluency in French a significant advantage.
