Applications are invited for a three-year fixed-term Lecturer position in Occupational and Environmental Studies within the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science. The successful applicant will have a significant national and international record in Occupational and Environmental Studies and will have relevant research and teaching interests and experience that will build upon the opportunities presented by the combination of subjects which comprise the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science (PHPPS) and its associated research institutes. The role will involve the provision of research leadership including high quality scholarship and international publication, securing new research funding, and the supervision of masters and doctoral students.

We seek to recruit an outstanding candidate who will continue to build on the School’s excellent reputation in research and teaching, and be successful in attracting research funding.
The appointee will contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes of the School and will be required to undertake postgraduate supervision. In addition, successful candidate will be expected to share responsibility for administration in the School.
The appointment, which will be tenable from September 2010 for a five-year period.

The Irish Longitudinal study on Ageing (TILDA) is a major inter-institutional initiative led by Trinity College Dublin which aims to produce a massive improvement in the quantity and quality of data, research and information relating to older people and ageing in Ireland. It involves interviews on a two yearly basis with a large cohort of people aged 50 and over to collect detailed information on all aspects of their lives, including the economic dimension (pensions, employment, living standards etc.), health aspects (physical, mental, service needs and usage etc.) and social aspects (contact with friends and kin, formal and informal care, social participation etc.)

The appointee will be responsible for carrying out specific tasks in an EU funded project with the objective of developing alternative packaging methods to high oxygen MAP, which will result in beef cuts that are appealing, tasty and safe.
BACKGROUND:Ashtown Food Research Centre (AFRC) is the co-coordinator of an EU funded project (PROSAFEBEEF) with the overall objective of improving the safety and quality of beef products through a whole chain approach. This appointment relates to the role of AFRC in developing alternative packaging strategies that will overcome the negative effects of high oxygen MAP packaging. The latter results in a bright red colour that is pleasing to consumers but recent research has shown that it also results in the beef being tougher and having off flavours. The approach will be to examine factors such as exposure to carbon monoxide prior to packaging in vacuum.

1. To provide support to the project co-ordinator of this large-scale project with national and international partner institutes and stakeholders.
2. To identify current knowledge gaps in Irish soil classification and aid in the development of a predictive soil classification model.
3. To develop and coordinate a training programme in collaboration with Cranfield University and supervise with the project manager the soil survey field programme.
4. To complete rationalisation of soil associations from the final dataset and correlation with the WRB system.
5. To develop and maintain active collaborative contacts with the relevant national and international research communities.

• Assessing the quality and shelf-life of beef.
• Preparing and assessing the quality of related beef products.
• Reviewing the relevant literature and planning experiments.
• Improvement of existing procedures, as appropriate.
• Liaison with international collaborators within ProSafeBeef project.
• Collation and analysis of data.
• Preparation of reports and publications.
• To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan.
• To actively participate in the annual business planning and PMDS processes.

The Marine Functional Foods Research Initiative (NutraMara) is a recently created programme for marine based functional food development funded by the Marine Institute and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (under its Food Institutional Research Measure). NutraMara consists of up to 30 individual scientists/postgraduate students working on the development of marine based functional foods targeting health areas which include food safety, cardiovascular health, immunity and colorectal cancer. The NutraMara initiative will combine expertise from a number of national institutes including Teagasc¡¦s food centres, University Colleges Cork and Dublin, NUI Galway, University of Limerick and University of Ulster.

Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development Authority, as the co-ordinator of the NutraMara initiative in collaboration with University College Dublin and University College Cork are now seeking to fill the following contract posts:


The successful candidate will join a collaborative research team, comprising Teagasc, Ashtown, UCC and DIT, that is focused on investigating acceptability of novel food technologies by consumers and industry. This post constitutes a 36 months fixed term contract and provides an excellent opportunity for an early stage researcher with experience in the marketing and/or consumer behaviour field to expand their knowledge and skill base through direct interaction with Irish consumers and food researchers.
