Cereal Scientist (Ref: CS/AFRC/0710) - The researcher will focus on formulating novel, healthy cereal-based snacks for the elderly. The ingredients and formulations used in the project will target the specific areas of malnutrition in elderly consumers. The appointee will have responsibility for conducting extensive studies relating to extrusion and baking properties, shelf-life and texture profiling, sensory analysis and nutritional characterization of the products. A fundamental scientific characterization of the molecular properties of the doughs and optimized products will also need to be undertaken using technologies such as NMR and microscopy. S/he will be expected to liaise with industry and be actively involved in the dissemination and commercial uptake of the results. This appointment will be made on a contract basis for a period of up to 48 months.

Engineering & Technology (CSET) award, in addition to
significant industry funding. The BDI carries out cutting-edge research focused on the development of next-generation
biomedical diagnostic devices measuring indicators of disease. Our world-class research team currently includes seven
industry partners (Analog Devices, J&J Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Becton Dickinson, Inverness Medical Innovations,
Biosurfit and Millipore), and five clinical and academic partners including the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI)
in Dublin, the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES) at NUI Galway, Tyndall National Institute
(TNI) in University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the host institution at Dublin City University (DCU).
Having recently secured an additional €19.1M from Science Foundation Ireland, and associated funding from our
industry partners, we are now seeking applications from suitably qualified research staff to participate in our suite of
exciting new research programmes commencing October 2010.

Applications are invited for the post of Professor / Head of School of Life Sciences, a joint appointment in the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) and the College of Medicine and Health (M&H) at University College Cork.

The School of Life Sciences incorporates the Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and Physiology, and comprises 58 academic staff, 14 administrative and 25 technical staff, 50 researchers/post-docs, 272 postgraduate FTEs (including 195 PhD students) and 1028 undergraduate FTEs.

University College Cork (UCC) was founded as Queen’s College Cork in 1845. UCC, which has a current enrolment of over 18,600 students, provides over 120 degree and professional programmes given through some 60 Disciplines and offers a research-led curriculum that attracts the highest calibre of students. UCC consistently delivers a globally significant contribution in research and in teaching and learning, which has secured the University a place in the top 3% of Universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education University Ranking (2009).
UCC wishes to recruit a Vice President for External Relations. Reporting to the President, The Vice President will be a key member of the senior management team of the University.

The National Institute for Intellectual Disability (NIID) is seeking a Senior Research Fellow to drive research activities at the Institute and enhance its research capacity and culture. This is an exciting role which will involve designing and managing research projects, securing research funding and supervising research staff and students. The successful candidate will hold a PhD relevant to the area of Intellectual Disability, possess an international publications record and have experience of group research environments. A demonstrated ability to secure research funding is essential. S/he must have the imagination to contribute creatively to the work of the Institute and the ability to be an effective team player.

Applications are invited for the full-time permanent post of Professor of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of a vibrant Department, which has very active research programmes, including a number of major research projects funded by Science Foundation Ireland, and strong links with the internationally renowned Tyndall National Institute. The Department looks forward to developing close links with the International Energy Research Centre, which the Irish Government is about to establish in Cork.

This project is for the development of a micro-rosette which will acquire and store water samples during the profilers' ascent, and conduct the analysis at park depth. Unlike pCO2 and pH, dissolved inorganic carbon measurement is well-suited for this type of ex-situ analysis because it is insensitive to temperature and pressure.

This project will result in the first autonomous, Lagrangian vertical profiles of DIC in the upper 2000 m of the ocean, marking a major step in development of a new generation of tools necessary to better understand annual cycles of carbon in addition providing direct observations of ocean acidi.cation over large areas of the ocean.

Accurate measurements of the atmosphere-ocean fluxes of trace gases are important to an improved understanding of the cycling of climatically relevant gases. The direct eddy correlation (EC) method, which is considered to be the benchmark for accurate determination of air-sea fluxes of trace gases, relies on high-frequency measurements of the fluctuations of vertical wind velocity and gas concentration, and requires fast response sensors in combination with high sensitivity.
These twin requirements have precluded oceanographic use of the EC technique for many species of interest, and direct measurements have been limited mainly to carbon dioxide at relatively high flux levels.
