You will be responsible for providing technical support at all stages of the research process including training students and staff, setting up equipment, collecting data, collating and analysing research results, developing new research methodologies, as well as responsibility for Health and Safety and Good Research Practice.
From time to time the nature of the research may require you or your team to travel within the UK and abroad (eg Australia, Botswana, South Africa) and may involve long or unsocial hours (eg very early morning starts at horse racing yards) and work in non-laboratory conditions (eg on farms). These all contribute to making the job interesting and varied.

Closing Date: 12 Noon on Friday, 26 February, 2010.
The Irish Longitudinal study on Ageing (TILDA) is a major inter-institutional initiative led by Trinity College Dublin which aims to produce a massive improvement in the quantity and quality of data, research and information relating to older people and ageing in Ireland. It involves interviews on a two yearly basis with a large cohort of people aged 50 and over to collect detailed information on all aspects of their lives, including the economic dimension (pensions, employment, living standards etc.), health aspects (physical, mental, service needs and usage etc.) and social aspects (contact with friends and kin, formal and informal care, social participation etc.)

A behavioral perspective on Supply Chain Management focuses on the attributes of human behavior and cognition that impact the design, management, and improvement of supply chains. This perspective may employ different empirical methods, such as experiments and surveys, and may build upon different levels of analysis, such as the individual (i.e. bounded rationality of individual decision takers) and the group (i.e. studies that explore the impact of social variables such as trust, dependency and learning on supply chain performance).

Climate-biosphere interactions play an important role in shaping future pathways of the Earth System, yet there is substantial uncertainty in current modelling efforts. Reducing this uncertainty requires a systematic assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current global biosphere models. We are seeking a highly-motivated scientist to build a comprehensive benchmarking system to critically evaluate global biosphere models used for Earth system modelling. Particular emphasis will be given to integrating new observations that constrain ecosystem responses to perturbations such as those arising from climatic changes. The successful candidate will actively participate in network-wide workshops and training events.

You will work on an ESRC/AHRC funded project on Muslim Participation in Contemporary Governance (funded within the ESRC/AHRC Religion and Society Programme).
This 30-month qualitative research project investigates the emerging significance of Muslim religious values, practices and engagement within contemporary governance in the UK. It explores: how current government strategies and policies relating to citizenship recognise and respond to Muslim religious difference; how participatory forms of governance engage with Muslim groups, religious values and identities; and the impact of Muslims’ participation in governance on policy processes and outcomes and for the organisation of and relations between Muslim civil society organisations more broadly. The research will be based on analysis of policy documents and qualitative research on participatory governance initiatives at national and local levels.

The appointee will be responsible for carrying out specific tasks in an EU funded project with the objective of developing alternative packaging methods to high oxygen MAP, which will result in beef cuts that are appealing, tasty and safe.
BACKGROUND:Ashtown Food Research Centre (AFRC) is the co-coordinator of an EU funded project (PROSAFEBEEF) with the overall objective of improving the safety and quality of beef products through a whole chain approach. This appointment relates to the role of AFRC in developing alternative packaging strategies that will overcome the negative effects of high oxygen MAP packaging. The latter results in a bright red colour that is pleasing to consumers but recent research has shown that it also results in the beef being tougher and having off flavours. The approach will be to examine factors such as exposure to carbon monoxide prior to packaging in vacuum.

    1. To provide support to the project co-ordinator of this large-scale project with national and international partner institutes and stakeholders.
    2. To identify current knowledge gaps in Irish soil classification and aid in the development of a predictive soil classification model.
    3. To develop and coordinate a training programme in collaboration with Cranfield University and supervise with the project manager the soil survey field programme.
    4. To complete rationalisation of soil associations from the final dataset and correlation with the WRB system.
    5. To develop and maintain active collaborative contacts with the relevant national and international research communities.
