PhD Studentship in Biomedical Engineering - AO Foundation - Davos - Switzerland
- By Switzerland CH Job Bank
- Published 12/8/2009
- Switzerland
Applications are invited for a studentship in the field of biomaterials surfaces leading to the degree of M.Phil/PhD. The studentship will be based between at the Implant Bioperformance Programme, AO Research Institute, Davos, Switzerland and the Centre of Cell Engineering, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, UK.
The objective of this studentship is to develop a method for incorporating nano-topography into thermoplastic polymer surfaces such as PEEK, and investigate the potential for these surfaces to allow cells to differentiate towards an osteoblast-phenotype in vitro with the aim of these surfaces being used orthopaedic implant applications.
Pore-scale conceptual models of multiphase flow through porous media - University of Lausanne - Lausanne - SWITZERLAND
- By Switzerland CH Job Bank
- Published 12/8/2009
- Education And Teaching , Switzerland
The purpose of this research project is to improve the understanding of the physical processes that take place at the pore scale and to ameliorate the reliability of conceptual and numerical models that describe the flow at larger scales. The project will include theoretical, numerical and experimental activities. In this context, the PhD candidate will focus on the investigation of pore-scale processes, which will include numerical simulations, conceptual modeling and scaling. He will address the question of the validity of the continuum description of porous media, and will search for alternative models.

MaNEP is a broad network of Swiss universities focusing its activities on the fundamental and applied research on novel materials with promising electronic properties. The DPMC is MaNEP’s leading house, and has a long tradition in the studies of materials with unconventional behavior. Researchers in the DPMC can rely on several top-quality experimental setups (high magnetic field magnetotransport, transport under pressure, specific heat, optical spectroscopy, scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy) as well as crystal and thin-film growth facilities.
